Urdu Wisdom Poetry: 30 Sher on Life & Hikmat (Trans)

Sabr ka daaman kabhi na chhorna,
Mushkilein khud raasta dengi morna.
Never let go of the cloak of patience,
Difficulties themselves will make way and turn.
Ilm ik noor hai, jahalat andhera,
Jo seekhe wohi paaye, rutba bada.
Knowledge is a light, ignorance is darkness,
He who learns, attains a great status.

Khamoshi mein hikmat, aksar hai nihaan,
Bolne se pehle, soch le insaan.
Wisdom is often hidden in silence,
Before speaking, a person should think.

Jo bo’oge wohi toh kaato ge tum,
Amal ka nateeja, na hoga kabhi kam.
Whatever you sow, that you shall reap,
The result of actions will never be insignificant.

Waqt ki qadar kar, yeh laut kar na aaye,
Jo ganwa de ise, woh baad mein pachhtaaye.
Value time, it will not return,
He who wastes it, will regret later.

Neki kar dariya mein daal, yeh qaul puraana,
Jazaa dene waala hai, Rabb meherbaana.
Do good and cast it into the river, this is an old saying,
The Giver of rewards is the Merciful Lord.

Jhoot ki bunyaadein, hoti hain kamzor,
Sach ki hoti hai, hamesha jeet aur zor.
The foundations of a lie are weak,
Truth always has victory and strength.

Takabbur na kar kabhi, aye ibn-e-Adam,
Khaak se bana hai, khaak mein hoga zam.
Never be arrogant, O son of Adam,
You are made from dust, and to dust you will merge.

Tajurba behtareen ustaad hai jaan lo,
Zindagi ke sabaq, is se pehchaan lo.
Know that experience is the best teacher,
Recognize the lessons of life from it.

Dil bada rakho, nazar bhi wasee’,
Chhoti baaton pe na ho kabhi ranj.
Keep a big heart, and a broad vision,
Never be aggrieved by small matters.

Ghussa aql ka dushman, yaad rakhna sadaa,
Thande dil se karo, har mushkil ka saamna.
Anger is the enemy of intellect, always remember,
Face every difficulty with a calm heart.

Achhi sohbat bithaaye, arsh-e-bareen par,
Buri sohbat giraaye, qa’ar-e-zameen par.
Good company seats you on the highest heaven,
Bad company drops you to the depths of the earth.

Ummeed ka daaman, thaame rehna zuroor,
Naa-umeedi hai kufr, yeh hai Rabb ka dastoor.
Be sure to hold onto the hem of hope,
Hopelessness is disbelief, this is the Lord’s way.

Qana’at mein raahat hai, hirs mein aazaar,
Jo mila shukr kar, ho jaa be-fikr yaar.
There is comfort in contentment, torment in greed,
Be thankful for what you received, and become carefree, friend.

Zabaan ko qaabu mein rakh, yeh hai talwaar tez,
Ik lafz se bane dost, ik se dushman azeez.
Keep your tongue in control, it is a sharp sword,
One word can make a friend, another a dear enemy.

Jo doosron ke liye garha khodta hai,
Aksar woh khud hi us mein girta hai.
He who digs a pit for others,
Often falls into it himself.

Khud-shanaasi hai raah-e-Khuda-shanaasi,
Apne andar jhaank, na ho kabhi maayoosi.
Self-knowledge is the path to knowing God,
Look within yourself, never be despondent.

Mehnat mein azmat hai, yeh jaan le bashar,
Be-amal zindagi, hai ik be-samar shajar.
There is greatness in hard work, know this, O human,
A life without action is like a fruitless tree.

Maa baap ki khidmat, jannat ki kunji,
Un ki dua se mile, har khushi zindagi.
Serving parents is the key to paradise,
Through their prayers, one gets every happiness in life.

Duniya hai ik saraaye, manzil nahin yeh teri,
Aakhirat ki fikr kar, baat maan le meri.
The world is an inn, not your destination,
Worry about the hereafter, heed my advice.

Aajizi ikhtiyaar kar, rif’at isi mein hai,
Jo jhukta hai Khuda ko, izzat isi mein hai.
Adopt humility, exaltation lies in it,
He who bows to God, honor lies in it.

Baat kehne se pehle, sau baar tol,
Be-soche samjhe kuch, hargiz na bol.
Before speaking, weigh your words a hundred times,
Never say anything without thinking.

Dushman se bhi rakho, ikhlaaq achha,
Ho sakta hai woh bhi, ban jaaye dost sachha.
Maintain good conduct even with an enemy,
It’s possible that they too may become a true friend.

Ilm baantne se barhta hai, ghat’ta nahin kabhi,
Roshni phailaao, yahi hai zindagi.
Knowledge increases by sharing, it never decreases,
Spread light, this is life.

Har mushkil ke baad aasaani hai zuroor,
Allah pe rakh bharosa, milega sukoon-o-suroor.
After every difficulty, there is surely ease,
Keep faith in Allah, you will find peace and joy.

Jo shukr adaa kare, ne’matein barh jaayen,
Naa-shukri se aksar, khushiyaan chhin jaayen.
For one who expresses gratitude, blessings increase,
Often through ingratitude, happiness is snatched away.

Saadgi mein husn hai, banaawat mein nahin,
Asliyat ko apnaao, yahi hai sahi.
There is beauty in simplicity, not in affectation,
Embrace authenticity, this is what’s right.

Maut barhaq hai, ik din sab ko aani,
Achhe a’maal kar, yahi hai zindagaani.
Death is certain, it will come to everyone one day,
Do good deeds, this is what life is about.

Doosron ki madad kar, be-gharaz ho kar,
Is mein sukoon milega, dil ko bhar kar.
Help others, being selfless,
In this, you will find peace, filling your heart.

Chhoti chhoti khushiyaan, zindagi ka hissa hain,
In ko mehsoos kar, yeh Rabb ka tohfa hain.
Small joys are a part of life,
Feel them, they are a gift from God.
